Lasik Laser Eye Surgery on the Cheap

Lasik Laser Eye Surgery on the Cheap

Lasik Laser Eye Surgery is now being marketed using the same hype we're grown to love (or hate) about our market driven society. No consideration or recognition that what is being touted is actually a serious surgery that could result in blindness or vision impairment. Instead, what we get are advertisements for surgery on the cheap.

Go to any major city newspaper and see ads like:

Lasic Eye Corrective Surgery for only $299.00 per eye

Limited time offer $599.00 per eye now available On SALE!

Or even a coupon.... for EYE SURGERY!

People forget about what we're really talking about is not a pair of shoes or a hamburger but a very life changing surgical procedure complete with a list of risks and potential negative outcomes. Still the discounts for Lasik or laser eye surgery continue unabated on the television, print media, billboards and radio.

The medical ethics and standards of the United States has been co-opted by the need to generate revenue. The cost of Lasik or Lasik Plus eye equipment and lasers is not insignificant while the overhead of a typical doctor's office continue to rise. We also have the problem of the American expectations being biased in favor of a given outcome regardless of the notifications and warnings provided before the procedure is done. So no matter what we're told, we expect what we want and anything that doesn't deliver, gives rise to that other great American tradition, suing! All these costs drive the push to do ever more work at ever lower prices.

This may on first look appear to be a benefit to the consumer. The problem however is that we're not talking about a pair of shoes where the risk of buying a bad pair of shoes is the loss of a couple of bucks. No, this is eye surgery! We're talking about risks that, although very rare, do include the complete loss of eyesight! There's no replacement parts for us humans people so we'd better take care of our existing parts.

Many doctors are still paying off older equipment. This limits the use of the more effective 'wavefront" technology that better maps the cornea. Mapping of the cornea results in better Lasik treatment. Wavefront allows better understanding of the refractive properties of the cornea and how to correct the problems associated with the shape of the cornea lens. Of course, new technology equals more expensive. This is problematic here in the States as Lasik or laser surgery is considered elective by most insurance companies. This means that in addition to advertising for business, the doctors also need to convince the patient to pay for the procedure out of their own pocket.

If you're considering Lasic, remember this is eye surgery and not a pizza! Be sure to educate yourself and not just listen to the barrage of advertisements for a good deal. Understand the risks and benefits so a good decision can be made. Find out from your doctor or ophthalmologist if you're a good candidate for the procedure. Get a second and if necessary a third opinion and NOT just from the doctor pushing for the surgery.
Find the best possible doctor and do not make the decision on price! Resolve to decide without hype or advertising bias. We're talking about your eyesight and an error in judgment can have devastating consequences.
